Congratulations to Dr. Hilary DeShong for receiving the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Enhancement Award (R15)! The NIH R15 supports small-scale research projects at educational institutions and the goals are to support meritorious research, expose students to research, and strengthen the research environment of the institution. Dr. DeShong will be collaborating with the following Co-Investigators at Mississippi State University: Dr. Sam Winer, Dr. Ben Porter, and Dr. Michael Nadorff.
Dr. DeShong's project examines the role of rumination and cognitive control within the emotion regulation process, which is relevant to public health, as this project investigates the process and mechanisms in which individuals with emotion regulation difficulties engage in when they experience specific emotions. This research can allow for the development of targeted intervention strategies to treat severe psychopathology, which would have tremendous positive public health implications, as it would decrease the burden on society by decreasing directly maladaptive behaviors, including suicide, substance misuse, and risky sexual behavior. Additionally, this project will support invaluable training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in ethical research practices, research methodology, advanced statistics, and development of publications and presentations.
