Graduate Students
Dr. DeShong accepts clinical psychology graduate students interested in general personality, personality pathology, and adaptive/maladaptive behaviors. She is seeking graduate students who are highly motivated, well-organized, and excellent time managers. She is particularly interested in recruiting a student with interests in pursuing a research-oriented career. Overall, the lab can be best described as research intensive, though given the lab’s focus on applied research, clinically-minded students may also find the lab to be a strong fit as long as they are willing to be active researchers while in the lab.

Graduate students in the DeShong Laboratory are involved in a number of projects and provided with ample opportunities to earn authorship for publications. Additionally, they are active in presenting data at local, regional, and national conferences. Graduate students are treated as junior colleagues within the lab, and are expected to play an active role in the lab. In addition to their milestone projects (e.g. thesis), graduate students are expected to play a significant role in other lab projects, as well as help mentor undergraduate students. Graduate students may also have the opportunity to collaborate with other labs so long as they are making good progress on their milestone projects and meeting expectations within the lab.

Please see the Psychology Graduate Student Brochure and the MSU Department of Psychology Graduate Program Website for more detailed information about the program and application process.
Dr. DeShong will be reviewing applications for the 2025 admission cycle.
Undergraduate Students
Dr. DeShong accepts undergraduate students as research assistants who are interested in general personality, personality pathology, and adaptive/maladaptive behaviors. Students should be interested in pursing graduate training in clinical psychology or a related field.

Undergraduate research assistants in the DeShong Laboratory work 9 hours a week and are involved in the day-to-day activities of running the laboratory. Students engage in a variety of tasks, which may include conducting literature reviews, managing databases, collecting data in the laboratory and/or the field, and entering previously collected data. Advanced research assistants are provided the opportunity to design and run their own research projects and/or to present findings at local and regional conferences. All undergraduate students attend a weekly lab meeting to discuss current projects and professional development topics.
